Room 12 had some fun creating an Educreations video during handwriting time about writing the perfect K. We found it tricky handwriting on the ipad but this helped us talk about what a perfect K looked like. Have a look at what we created..

The parts of each stage may not match exactly to the rungs on the Redwood Basic Facts ladder, but do reflect what each child needs to know at each math stage. Students in after 3 years at school should be working at early stage 5. Before this however, stages 2-3 and 4 need to be known well :) What is really great about this website is that it marks the answers and you have two options - to be timed, or to do it as a sheet.

Exploring fractions
Last Friday, Room 12 had fun exploring fractions. Room 12 were asked to make and find fractions using anything and everything from around the room such as Lego, playdough, paper and math blocks! They had to make sure that if they were making fractions, the parts of the whole had to be equal/ the same. This helped us refresh our minds about what fractions are and ways fractions can be found. Term 3
Welcome all to Term 3!
I hope everyone had a fantastic break and it's been great to see everyone.
Almost at the end of week 2 and we are all settled in once again! In maths we have been learning all about probability. We move onto ratios and proportions (fractions) from week 3 and this will cover most of the term. I'm looking forward to having lots of fun dicing and slicing things into halves, quarters, eighths, fifths, thirds... and I could go on!
In reading we have begun to learn about a new reading strategy called summarising. It's a fantastic strategy, especially when year 3's are beginning to read longer texts.
In writing, we have been focusing on brainstorming and giving exciting new words a go. The vocabulary Room 12 has been coming up with has been amazing! Let's not forget the importance of making sure we have full stops and capitals though..
Finally, our inquiry this term is called 'Fun with Friends', and we will be focusing on lots of different aspects of games. At the moment, we have been following the Commonwealth Games.
As you know, learning conferences are very quickly coming up next Wednesday and Thursday. Please do let me know if none of the available times left suit you.
Lastly, I took a number of photos from our market day. These have been posted below.

National Standards Expectations Tab
Hi all,
The National Standards and understanding the learning expectations can certainly be confusing! I have therefore added some easy to follow information regarding the expectations in reading, writing and maths after 2 and 3 years and by the end of year 4 in a tab at the top. The files even contain information regarding how you can help at home. I hope you will find them useful!

New Tab - Home Math Knowledge Activities
Hi Parents and Caregivers,
I have added a new tab to the top of the blog. If you are interested in working on a child's math knowledge at home, this tab will interest you! If you click on 'Home Math Knowledge Activities' you will come to a page full of Number Sequence, Place Value and Number Facts activities that you can do at home, based on a child's math level. Some activities also include printable resources. To get to the activities, just click on each box - I would recommend clicking on those boxes at the year 3-4 level. However, some children have only just been at school 2 years - so don't be afraid to check out the year 2 level also as it includes all that really fundamental math knowledge.

Homework Update
Kia ora parents and caregivers,
I have been getting a few queries regarding homework and so I thought I would provide you with a little more information that I hope might clear up any questions you may have. Homework is essentially the same every week. Children should be practicing their basic facts and reading for ten minutes each night. A child is certainly not restrained to only practicing the single rung they are sitting at. I would encourage you to revisit lower rungs also to ensure early, essential basic facts are still remembered. Reading Eggs and Mathletics are also fantastic websites children can hop onto to supplement their homework. Sometimes I may set tasks for students through Mathletics which are related to specific learning needs. These tasks have to be completed before they are able to access the regular Mathletics website.
The white sheet that frequently goes home that contains the 'extra for experts' grid of activities does not change - so if your child does not receive this sheet there are no problems. When a student improves their basic facts level, I do then endeavour to send one of these white slips home with their new stage written at the top of the page. If you are ever unsure where your child is working, please don't hesitate to come into the class and check out the basic facts ladder on the wall.
Homework books are due on Fridays and go back out the same day.
